Traditional engineering methods do not teach us how to solve problems. Most of the times engineers are faced with circumstances where a certain problem has an improving parameter and a worsening parameter at the same time. 90% of the times traditional engineers always find a compromise between the two situations which also leads to sub problems. They are not taught to resolve these conflicts. The most common method to generate new ideas is via brainstorming. However, the ratio of ideas generated to the ideas implemented is extremely poor and is ineffective. Though methods have been developed to overcome these problems.
The major disadvantages of traditional engineering methods are:
• The time taken for achieving good solutions is too slow and time consuming.
• The solutions that were proposed could lead to many other sub problems and increase
overall costing, complexity and reduce productivity of companies.
Modern TRIZ tools eliminated brainstorming and developed reliable, repeatable and teachable methods for inventions and generating not many but just a few ideas. However, all of these” Non-Trivial” solutions are practical and implementable. This increases the efficiency and speed to market immensely. TRIZ based solutions often generate “strong patents that can be commercialised within the shortest possible duration” on a regular basis bringing a competitive edge to the organisation and increasing business impact.
